Pablo's Story

Birth & Background

Pablo Picante was born in Ensenada, Baja California to the humble beginnings. He was one of seventeen niños including a twin brother, Pedro. When Pablo was very young his padres made the migración to USA to earn money for the familia.

Aunt Conchita took over the parenting duties and Pablo was obliged to learn to cook. Under the tutelage of Aunt Conchita, Pablo learned the secret tastes and recipes from the entire región of California.

Cooking For The Familia

As Pablo learned to cook, he learned about the maravilloso fresh ingredientes available across Baja California and American California - soft flour tortillas, slow cooked meats, pinto beans, black beans and a wide selección of fresh and dried chillis - chipotles, habaneros, seranos and guajillos.

As a teenager, Pablo made a Taqueria stand in San Felipe. Here he served the finest burritos in Baja Norte to the many Gringo American tourists.

Becoming a Luchador

With all the healthy eating in a big family, Pablo grew up grande and fuerte. He was forced to defend himself and his younger siblings in the barrios of Ensenada. He became fascinated by Mexican Wrestling: Lucha Libre. His idolos were the great luchadors: El Santo and Blue Demon.

After going to his first Lucha Libre show with twin brother Pedro, Pablo was determined to follow in their footsteps and rise from the poor background of the barrio.

Mask Seleccion 1998

When Pablo commencar in the Lucha Libre he was obligado to choose a mask to describe the proud Aztec historia of his famillia...jello and red became this mask from the grande seleccion

The First Lucha

After impressing the head honchos of Lucha Libre, Pablo was given the chance to wrestle at the “Friday Lucha” in Tijuana.

He was young and skinny but had the speed and agression of a Baja scorpion. His signature move became known later in USA as the “Mojave Scorpion Kick”

The 'Big Time'

After winning his first championship in Mexicali, Pablo made the decisión to travel to Hollywood for the ‘Big Time’.

Like many Mexican emigrantes travelling to California, Pablo packed his beans, rice and carne in a tortilla like the pack on travelling donkeys (‘Burrito’ = ‘little donkey’ en español)

California Trailer Park 1998

When Pablo first arrive in the Estados Unidos he make his home at the California Trailer Park in Los Angeles. Even after mucho success, Pablo still have many friends in this barrio...staying verdad to the roots is muy importante.

Murals 2002

After Pablo wins the Norte Mexico Lucha Libre belt, the fanaticos around Baja California make many murals to celebrate the victoria. This one in Ensenada is the favorita of Pablo.

Fancy Auto 2002

For Pablo's primera victoria, he use the money to buy the most fancy auto in Ensenada...many chicas start to notice Pablito in this moment.

Fame for Pablo

After much success in Mexico and USA, Pablo becomes famoso around the world. He receive much letters and photos from his many fans. They show Pablo that they wear the yellow and red mascara in homage to their Lucha Libre hero and his burritos deliciosos, for this he feels much pride.

Bringing Pablo's burritos to the world

While wrestling in the USA, Pablo stayed in the Mission District and had the realización of how Americanos love the Mexican food.

One of Pablo’s fanaticos in Irlanda explained about the lack of good burritos and begged for Pablo to bring his flavours there. For this Pablo assembled an excellent team and the right ingredientes to make his burritos for Los Irlandeses.

The Baggot Street Casa

Pablo realised the people of Dublin were bored with sandwiches and unhealthy fast food. For this Pablo's primero Burrito Bar opened on Baggot Street in February 2010, it is very small but perfecto for the nutritious food made rapidly. The response has been very nice with very many people to visit and nice reviews in the paper.

Pablo won the Best Burrito in Dublin 2010 from Entertainment.ie and was voted the 4th best restaurant in Dublin by the Dubliner Magazine.

Clarendon Market Casa

Pablo was getting to big for the boots, because of the many visitors to Pablo Picante every day it soon became obvious that more space was necesario. So after the grande success of the Baggot Street Casa he opened his segundo Burrito Bar on Clarendon Market, al lado to Grafton Street.

Clarendon Market is larger with a bigger menu and more seating; more space for Pablo to practise his nueva moves. Pablo welcomes his compadres to la nueva casa in 2011.

The Temple Bar Casa

Pablo realised the popularidad of Dublin with turistas ¿Where do they all go? Why Temple Bar of course.  En 2012 Pablo opened a 3rd burrito bar at 22 Temple Bar... ¡But it is ciertamente not a tourist trap amigos!

The first torta house at Clarendon Market

Tortas are muy muy popular in Mexico and Pablo wanted to bring their delicious combinacions to Dublin for his Irish compadres.  En 2013 Pablo opened a Torta House directly next door to the burrito bar en Clarendon Market making pulled pork, chicken & chorizo, steak & guaca combinacion sandwiches ¿But what to call it? After much research and study, Pablo called it after himself (again) ¡Pablo's Tortas!
